Working in the community is one of the most fulfilling experiences I have ever had. Seeing the impact of the work I do is what motivates me to keep going. As part of my job at Goodwill Industries, I have been organizing donation drives in the Calgary region every few weeks. This has been an incredible experience, and I am excited to share my journey with you.
Organizing a donation drive involves connecting with community associations in different areas, planning the logistics, and promoting the event to ensure everyone in the community knows about it. My team and I would organize the truck, as well as employees to help load it. We would also contact the city to provide proper disposal and recycling bins to ensure zero waste was produced.
The donation drive days were always so enjoyable. Not only did I get to enjoy the weather, but I also got to interact with people in the community and sift through all the cool donated items. This experience inspired me to start the donation drive cup project, which is set to take place in September 2023.
The project vision began in the summer of 2022, with the plan to start a friendly competition among 5 major Calgary high schools. The goal was to introduce thrift shopping and donation to a younger demographic, showing them how unique the experience is and how they are simultaneously doing something good for the community and the environment.
To motivate the students, prizes would be given to the winning schools, including scholarships, events, and money. As part of my role, I had to create the scholarship question and concept, ensuring that it was inclusive to all. I took a very open-ended approach to how the students would approach it, making it a fun and engaging task.
I am proud of all the work and input I put into this project, and it will be exciting to see it play out over the next year. Working in the community has been an incredible journey, and I look forward to doing more of it in the future.
