As someone who has had the opportunity to participate in both team and individual sports from a young age, I can attest to the incredible life skills and experiences that come with it. My sports journey began in early childhood when I started playing soccer and practicing taekwondo.
Taekwondo played a crucial role in teaching me not only physical strength, but also mental fortitude, courtesy, integrity, self-control, and determination. By the age of 14, I had earned my first-degree black belt and was proud of the achievements and self-improvement that came with it.
As I entered my teenage years, I decided to focus more time and effort on my soccer career. I was fortunate to have parents who were incredibly supportive and dedicated to my success in youth sports. Every day after school, my dad would drive me an hour out of town to The Calgary Foothills Soccer Academy, where I spent hours training with my team.
All the hard work and time put in paid off in a big way in 2016 when my team was selected to attend the Gothia Cup in Sweden. This two-week-long tournament was both a physical and mental challenge, as daily training and games occurred, and it marked my first trip away from home without my parents. Overcoming this fear was a significant personal accomplishment for me.
Later that same year, I led my team to a national championship title in Moncton, New Brunswick. Taking on the position of team captain taught me some invaluable leadership lessons. I learned to lead by example, to be positive even during the toughest moments, to communicate effectively with my teammates, to teach leadership qualities to others, and to care for each and every member of the team, both on and off the field.
When COVID hit, I began to take up an interest in running and found a new passion in track and field. My main races are the 200 meters and the 400 meters, and I competed for the Calgary International Track Club until I moved away for school in 2020. During my first year at the University of Western Ontario, I was fortunate enough to train with their varsity team, meeting like-minded individuals in the community.
Overall, sports have played an integral role in shaping who I am today. Being a student-athlete has given me a sense of pride, taught me invaluable lessons, and enabled me to remain healthy, active, and strong throughout my adult years. Sports have been an amazing outlet for me to properly structure my life, maintain good moods, and stay positive.
